Deutsch.

I took 3 years of German in high school. It's been 5 years since then and even then I didn't learn it/wasn't taught it very well. Strangely enough, I often find myself thinking little phrases in German instead of English. I wonder what would have happened if I took a more intensive course in German. Would I always think in fluent German?

I do the same things with French. I took three years of it and I miss it.

I guess a foreign language is just one of those little things that gets into your head? Do you ever think to yourself in computer language? :-)

Oooh!! I love French and try to use it as often as possible. I haven't had a French class in ages, but with all the online stuff available, it's not hard to flex your foreign language muscles a little bit here and there.

I just wish my muscles were a little stronger. I didn't exactly get the best foundation in high school!

lol the sad thing is, yes. sometimes when i'm thinking through a decision i list off the points as a series of if-statements.

if (dumb boy == true) then
  {
    shake head, sigh, move on;
  }
else {
    attempt normal conversation;
  }

averagefry--I knew it! And I love it! Back in the day when I learned a little bit of code for FEH I remember thinking code like that. However, I don't remember most of it.

I sometimes talk to myself in Italian, but that's mostly because I'm a loser :-P

And as far as thinking mathematically, I've found that it actually affects my sense of humor. A lot of my math friends and I will come up with the same snarky comment to something because of the literal sense of humor that we get from the math that we do. Mathematicians give words very rigorous definitions, and so we both use these words to describe everyday things in a very dorky way, or we point out when some of these words are used in non-mathematical (and non-precise) ways.

I can't think of a good example, but you probably wouldn't want me to anyway ;-)

Hehe, I bet that sort of thing happens within everyone's area of study. Especially when they are far along in studies, like you, Mr. Math!
