Strange...

I noticed a strange phenomenon at work today--when my hair is down in a braid (such that it reaches the middle of my back), people tend to be unable to resist the urge to give it a tug or swing it. From my boss to the grumpy bartender, many people played with it over the three days I wore it in a braid to work. Silly people! Luckily, I don't mind at all.

However, I do mind that people are advocating my hair being cut. I'm not at the point where I want to cut my hair yet, but almost everyone at work thinks that I should cut it. Or let them cut it. Eep. I just finally started being able to braid it without the shorter layers poking out of the braid funny! I'm pretty sure everyone is just jealous because my hair is so long (and pretty).

Tonight is Sunday Funday with some of the people from work. I'm pretty excited. :-)

I got my hair cut back in California, and I'm worried about being in Africa with it. My hair is rather thick and gets quite curly, as you know, and I'm somewhat hesitant to get my hair cut in Africa.

You see, I'm familiar with the fact that black people have inherently different hair and that often times white people are uneducated in how to cut/style it. I'm also wondering if the same is true reversed.

Regardlessly, the craziness of my hair is something that sometimes gives people difficulties during a haircut. I wouldn't even get it cut when I was in Italy (can you say mullet or rattail???), so I'm unsure about what might happen this summer :-p

Honestly, if I were you, I would get it buzzed pretty short (not bald, of course). That way you won't have to even worry about it, and it should grow out too much while you're there. And your head will be cooler!!

Good luck with your hair dilemma :-)

I'm always intrigued with how hair is such an issue with some people. When my husband's hair was very long, it really irritated other men. AND some women. Now it's shorter, but still considered "long" by most men his age. He gets a lot of thinly veiled comments, especially by bald men. What is the big deal? He's not effeminate by any means, and he's in construction, so there's no lack of machismo around. Some people are just funny about hair in general.

I agree, some people are funny about hair. One of my coworkers said to me last night "How old are you? Even my 6 year old doesn't have long hair." Erm...so? When I was 6 I always had short hair, so once I was of an age to decide my own hair-do, I chose long!
